Louie Gialedakis is entering his fifth season as the Head Coach of the Toronto Marlboros 2001 team, of the Greater Toronto Hockey League. This after four very successful seasons where Gialedakis took his team from 7th place, where the team finished the season before he arrived, to 1st place, two back-to-back Kraft Cups for winning the Regular Season Championship, and a GTHL City Championship this past season.
Prior to a successful year, as the Head Coach and General Manager of the Dixie Beehives Jr. ‘A’ team, (OJHL), his previous eight seasons were spent as Head Coach of 1992 AAA teams in the GTHL, gradually moving up a division each year. During that time, he also gained valuable Jr. ‘A’ experience as Assistant Coach for two seasons with the Vaughan Vipers in the OJHL.
Gialedakis spent four years with the Vaughan Kings where he steadily built his 1992 born team into Regular Season Midget AAA Champions in 2008-09. This came after a very successful four-year run as the Head Coach of the Toronto Marlboros. Concurrently, he served as the Assistant Coach of the 1987-born Marlboros.
Gialedakis brings to the Toronto Marlboros 2001 team the same philosophy and methodology as always, which is namely, to recruit and develop players who:
- Have the will to work hard and learn
- Possess the desire to be the very best hockey player they are capable of being
- To be accountable for their actions both on and off the ice
A devoted teacher of the game of hockey, Gialedakis strives for the success of each and every one of his players. The three utmost important criteria that he has of his team are to show class, to work hard, and to be accountable for their actions.
Louie Gialedakis is recognized by his peers as an exceptional mentor to players and their families. In his eight years with the 1992 age group in the GTHL, he has recruited, developed, and coached 33 players who went on to be drafted in the Ontario Hockey League’s 2008 Priority Selection. Further, eight of these players have gone on to be drafted in the NHL; one of which went on to win a Stanley Cup in his Rookie year.
Through his summer Prospects Program, The Black Aces, Gialedakis has mentored 30 other young men over the last seven years, including players who were playing in the USA Development Program, and are now playing in the NCAA, or have graduated through Division 1 Hockey in the NCAA. Of this elite group, ten of these players have been drafted by the NHL. Gialedakis still maintains a strong friendship with these young men and is available to lend an ear when required.
Gialedakis not only served as a Head Coach but also as an on-ice instructor in several hockey camps/clinics which include: Hockey Canada Team East camp coach, Hockey Canada hockey clinics, Under-16 regional camps, Toronto Maple Leafs hockey camps, Pro Hockey Development Group camps, National Training Centre programs and was selected to coach in the Under-17 program where he has been undefeated in two years. His future ambitions include coaching players at more advanced levels such as that of the OHL, the USHL or the NCAA and to become a scout in the NHL.
Louie Gialedakis also played minor hockey in the GTHL (formerly known as the Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League) with the Toronto Red Wings’ Organization. In July of 1979, prior to the start of his OHL draft year, Gialedakis suffered a stroke that prevented him from playing competitive hockey. His passion for the game never diminished and in 1984, after a lengthy but full recovery, Gialedakis returned to the rink in his new capacity as a coach and mentor. At the same time, he was continuing his education at Seneca College.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Gialedakis graduated from Westview Centennial Secondary High School, then went on to Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. In 1985, he graduated with Honours in International Business. Louie and his wife Effie along with their 23-year-old son, Manny and 21-year old daughter, Maria reside in Woodbridge, Ontario. |
